 A Simple Favor 

    At the beginning of the movie, it opens up to the deep space of this mysterious mother coming toward the other mother and kids. The deep-space shows the audience the Porsche that the woman owns and how she is the focal point of what the audience will see the difference in mothers, one is super rich and beautiful and the other is a helicopter parent disguised as a 12-year-old. Soon after this slow-motion appearance, the mothers meet up at the front of the school with their kids. The costume of the mother in bright yellow shows her as being full of life and energy and being happy always. On the other hand, we can see the other mom is dressed very formally and in all black showing that she is mysterious and is high up in her company. We can also see that the background of sunlight peeks through the clouds to illuminate the women walking towards the camera. 

    As the movie progresses, both mothers and kids are taken to the blonde's house so the kids can have a play date. The majority of the movie's setting takes place in this very modern looking house. The Porsche has become visible again and this whole scene shows wealth. The colors of the house are very neutral and reserved, trying not to attract too much attention to the family.

    

    In the house, high-key lighting is introduced. Everything brightens up from the rain before and the dullness. The kitchen full of white cabinets shows the audience luxury and purity. The blonde mother's face glows up once alcohol is introduced. The other mom is very closed off with her hands crossed because she does not drink she is the 'good parent.' The audience can tell that this perfect woman is the mother that went missing and is the one with all the secrets. The blonde mother often shows that she is perfect on the outside but is struggling with all of these repressed feelings on the inside. The other mother's apparel shows that she is not rich and her choice of style shows she is conservative with her body.

 The Queen's Gambit

Cool Hues

  

    This scene in the first episode of 'The Queen's Gambit portrays a very intense and serious moment. At the beginning of the episode, the girl's (the name is unknown at the moment) past memories are showing up. The start of this scene showed a close-up of the little girl's face and a cop telling another cop that it is a miracle that she survived. The black, dull lighting on the right side of the picture surrounds the car accident and the dead bodies next to it. It creates a feeling of loss, sadness, and anger. The bright white hues on the girl's body show the viewer how innocent the little girl is to what just happened. The green hues give vibrancy to the scene and give off the sense that this girl will have a future. The little girl's clothes are green and white and this adds to the overall mood of how she is lost since both of her parents just died. In the first episode, cool hues are used during the majority of the episode because the girl is recalling memories that have a negative impact on her life but at the same time, this is how she learns the game of chess.

Warm Hues 

 

    Elizabeth is seen as coming down to the basement to play chess with the janitor out of a pure fascination for the game. The bright light in the center of the two characters shines of white, yellow, and a hint of orange. This mix of colors provides happiness and confidence in the little girl for the first time in her life. The white and green costumes give off her youth as she is playing an older man in chess. It shows innocence but also a sense of dominance because she feels confident about the game after only observing and never been taught.

Blue Hues

    The blue hues are very consistent when Elizabeth is being sent to bedtime at the orphanage. During the time of night, Elizabeth takes a 'special pill' that alters her brain and when she looks up at the ceiling she sees her chess games. In this particular scene, the blue hues are used to emphasize her thinking about the key move, the queen's gambit. They are also used to show peacefulness since she is the only one up and is thinking about something that calms her down and makes her happy. The wide shot gives the audience the ability to see the chess game, piece, and also Elizabeth at work and staring in awe.
